Obituary for Joseph Patrick Lydon

Joseph Patrick  Lydon
Joseph Patrick Lydon, 89, most recently of Canaan, CT, and previously of Dover Plains, NY, and Poughkeepsie, NY, died on February 2, 2014 at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Canaan, CT. Born on November 29, 1924 in Williamsport, PA he was the son of the late Thomas and Lucinda (Betson) Lydon. Mr. Lydon proudly served in the U.S. Navy aboard DE-146, the USS Inch, from 1943 – 1946. On September 14, 1946 in South Williamsport, PA he married Cherie Maneval, who survives him in Canaan, CT.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Michael Lydon and his wife, Margaret of Hillsborough, NC and two daughters, Cindy Dubinski and her husband, Martin, of Hopewell Junction, NY and Mary Murphy and her husband, William, of Amenia, NY. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Laura Savenelli, Matthew Lydon, Jeffery Dubinski-Neessen, Tiffany Weinreich, Benjamin Dubinski, Connor and Owen Lynch, Liam Murphy, and Abbey and Krista Murphy. Mr. Lydon is also survived by six great-grandchildren, with another on the way.
Mr. Lydon received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. He began his career as a math teacher and basketball coach in Wellsboro, PA and West Orange, NJ. He later worked in atomic research at Curtiss Wright in Clearfield, PA. He joined IBM Federal Systems Division in Owego, NY in 1959, transferring to East Fishkill in 1968. He retired from IBM in 1990, after more than thirty years of service.
Mr. Lydon was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club, the Oak Grove Grange, the American Legion, Amenia Senior Citizens, and the VFW. Joe and his wife, Cherie enjoyed participating in several local bridge clubs and book clubs. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Wappinger Falls, NY and more recently a member of the South Amenia Presbyterian Church in Wassaic, NY.
A private memorial service has been held for the family with Rev. Zora Ficarra-Cheatham officiating. Inurnment with military honors will take place at the Community Mausoleum at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, NY at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Lydon's name to the First Presbyterian Church of Wappingers Falls, 2568 South Avenue, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 103, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601-4060.
