Amanda Irene Peterson, 98, of Poughkeepsie, NY, formerly of Huntington, NY, died peacefully on Thursday, July 24, 2014 surrounded by her loving family at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Born on November 16, 1915 in Brooklyn, NY, Mrs. Peterson was the daughter of the late John Andrew Peterson, Sr. (born in New York Harbor on a ship coming from Sweden) and Elizabeth Cecelia Peterson (nee Quinn) whose parents came from Scotland. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Thomas Aquinas (Roman Catholic) Church in Brooklyn, NY. On September 5, 1942, she married August Frank Sand at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Brooklyn.

Mrs. Peterson worked as a secretary with Gibson-Cox Naval Engineers in New York City and a buyer at Hartman's Department Store in Huntington, NY. She also worked at Reed's Department Store and was a gifted seamstress.

Mrs. Peterson was a beloved mother who is survived by a daughter, Geralyn Amanda Turner of Dover Plains, NY and three sons, George August Sand of Fort Myers, FL, Gregory Anthony Sand of North Port, NY and Glenn Alan Sand of Newark, DE, ten grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 83 Mill St. in Dover Plains, NY. Burial will take place at St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 14 Pine Drive, Pawling, NY 12564.
