Obituary for Raymond P. Proper

Raymond P. Proper, 88, a lifelong Amenia resident and business owner, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Proper was a barber who owned and operated Ray’s Barber Shop in Amenia for many years retiring in 2005.

Born on October 13, 1929 in Amenia, NY, he was the son of the late Earl and Margaret Elizabeth (Morris) Proper. On October 21, 1950 at Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia, he married Mary Ellen Mahoney who survives at home. Mr. Proper served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a life member, a former recording secretary and treasurer of the Amenia Fire Company; a member of V. F. W. Post #5444 in Dover Plains and the Amenia Town Ball Team. He was a lifelong parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Raymond J. Proper of Amenia and his daughter, Barbara Cummings of Jacksonville Beach, FL; a sister, Elizabeth Scarlotta of Granville, NY and a brother, Earl Proper, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Carrie Clark of Clearwater, FL, Erin Johnson of Jacksonville, FL and Ryan Cummings of Jacksonville Beach, FL; two great grandchildren, Jordan Clark and Kennedy Clark and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Sister Helen Proper; three brothers, Francis, Vincent and John Proper.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Church, Lavelle Rd., Amenia with Rev. R. Kent Wilson officiating. Burial will take place at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Amenia.
