Hufcut Funeral Home was founded by Errol B. Hufcut, a lifelong Town of Dover resident, who purchased the business in 1928 from John Hanna, an undertaker and casket maker. For many years, the Hufcut family operated the funeral home on Market St. in Dover Plains. After serving in World War II, Errol's son, E. Raymond Hufcut, became a licensed director and operated the funeral home with his wife, Jessie, until November 1985. Larry and Katie House, who formerly worked at Beecher Funeral Home in Brewster, NY, have operated the funeral home since that time.
In March 1993, Larry and Katie purchased the former home of Arthur Palmer, a successful businessman and farmer during the mid-1900s. Following extensive renovation of the three-story Colonial home, stone gazebo, and carriage house, the Houses relocated the business to the intersection of Route 22 and Mill St. in Dover Plains in January 1994. In April 2012, Andrew, Larry and Katie's son, joined the business as a licensed funeral director. The funeral home has a 100-car parking lot, handicapped-accessibility, and spacious and tastefully-decorated facilities.
